How We Work with You and Your Clients

Your Legal Practice
Your firm handles the formation of the foundation, obtains the EIN, and submits the application for tax-exempt status (IRS Form 1023). You also establish key governing policies, including those related to investments, expenses, and conflicts of interest.

Your Clients
Before any funding or activity begins, the foundation is onboarded as a Foundation Copilot client. Once funded, your client takes the lead in governing the foundation setting strategy and making all grantmaking and investment decisions while continuing to work with their existing financial advisors, including you.

How We Support You
We take care of the day-to-day services needed to keep the foundation operating efficiently and in compliance. Each client is paired with a dedicated Private Client Advisor who acts as the main point of contact and coordinates all foundation-related services.

Grant administration and fund disbursements

Expense review and processing

Ongoing compliance oversight for foundation activities

Monitoring progress toward the annual 5% minimum distribution requirement

Accounting and reconciliation for the foundation

Tax preparation (including Form 990-PF and related filings), as well as required state filings

Foundation Copilot’s Philanthropic Directors are seasoned experts who can offer guidance to foundations through periodic phone consultations. When more comprehensive support is needed, they also provide tailored, in-depth engagements, which may include:
